Macquarie Telecom appoints Mike King to drive sales growth
Macquarie Telecom has appointed Mike King as its National Director of Sales, with the aim of expanding its sales and marketing operations and consolidating its position in the Australian connectivity, cloud, and cyber security market.
King returns to Macquarie Telecom with over two decades of experience in the Australian telecommunications and cloud sectors. His prior roles include Head of Enterprise and Government Sales at TPG Telecom, Director Northern Region Sales at NTT Communications ICT Solutions, and earlier positions at Macquarie, including State Sales Manager NSW. King began his career as Sales Manager at Optus, spending his first 10 years in the industry at the company.
In his new position, King will be responsible for leading business growth in telecoms, cloud services, cyber security, and data centre services, working in collaboration with other areas of the Macquarie Technology Group.
Changing industry landscape
King commented on the changing approach among major telecommunications providers in Australia and positioned Macquarie Telecom as focused on expanding rather than contracting its offerings.
"Many large telcos continue to overcharge and underdeliver. This will only worsen as the big players favour their core offerings while abandoning the products and services customers have long relied on," he said. "Macquarie is stepping up as a challenger to set the market straight and doubling down on SD-WAN, SASE, cyber security, and cloud to deliver real customer value.
"Macquarie has always solved complex customer challenges. We're set apart by the strength and capability of our people and comprehensive managed technology solutions – from security to cloud, to telco, all under one roof – which present distinct advantages to the market."
King observed that as other large telecom providers scale back some service capabilities to focus on their core business areas, Macquarie Telecom is expanding efforts in areas where clients are seeking solutions. This includes a focus on Software-Defined Wide Area Networks (SD-WAN), Secure Access Service Edge (SASE), cyber security, and cloud-based services.
Business stability and sector growth
King described Macquarie Technology Group's business model as stable and designed for sustained growth, supporting ongoing investment across key technology areas.
"Macquarie Technology Group is a very stable and secure business allowing us to make intelligent decisions in a planned and disciplined manner. Invest for growth, in cloud computing, cyber, and data centres. Those business units are driving the market and transforming the industry as we know it."
King emphasised the importance of bringing knowledge and best practices from his experiences in the wider managed services industry, noting the fast-paced nature of technology change and the need for providers to adapt in order to deliver positive customer outcomes.
"Businesses move at lightning speed, managing constant waves of change. As a managed service provider learning how to lead the market and operate at speed and scale is critical in delivering exceptional customer outcomes. People join organisations because they feel it's a vehicle that can enable their careers and deliver customer value. I think the opportunities to learn and grow with Macquarie is exciting for anyone in the industry."
Guidance and collaboration
In his new capacity, King will work closely alongside Luke Clifton, Macquarie Telecom's head and group executive.
"Mike's track record speaks volumes, and he truly embodies the qualities Macquarie is renowned for. He knows the business inside out, and the business knows him, making this a natural fit," Clifton said.
"Mike brings the depth of experience needed to help guide Macquarie into its next chapter of growth and bring great new talent into the company. We're eager to see the impact Mike will make, combining passion with creative, outside-the-box thinking. His positive and supportive approach will undoubtedly be felt in every interaction he has with employees, customers, and partners.
"We have an incredible team and innovative offerings to take to market, and I can't wait to see Mike inspire customers to make the bold move they know they deserve and will transform their business."
King's return to Macquarie Telecom marks a period of continued investment across its technology solutions and people, with a pronounced focus on customer value and transformation in the Australian managed services space.
